52,126 Motorists Enjoying a Cheaper Ride With LPG -- 8 June 2007
Media Release 8 June 2007
Motorists have responded enthusiastically to the Australian Government’s rebate for converting cars to LPG use, claiming more than $100 million in grants in just 10 months "More than 52,000 motorists have received Australian Government grants to buy LPG-dedicated cars or to convert their existing cars to use LPG," said Australian Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane.
Mr Macfarlane announced the milestone at Top of the Range Autogas & Mechanical in Toowoomba, which carries out the majority of LPG conversions in the region. Almost $10 million has been spent on conversions in Queensland alone. Mr Macfarlane said the scheme had been exceptionally well received by motorists with demand far exceeding the government's expectations.
"With climbing petrol prices putting pressure on the household budget, our LPG Vehicle Scheme offers families a cheaper fuel alternative. "The scheme provides a tax-free grant of up to $2,000 for an LPG conversion and $1,000 towards the purchase of an LPG dedicated vehicle.
"There are now an extra 52,126 motorists using LPG, saving money on fuel and helping the environment in the process.
"The LPG industry has responded tremendously by ramping up production, employing and training more installers and increasing capacity," Mr Macfarlane said. "We are working on around three to four conversions each week and demand has been constant since the program was introduced," said Brian Slater from Top of the Range Autogas & Mechanical.
